Anyone who has tried to drive down to the beach in August already knows the problem a sea taxi in Taormina solves. The road from the old town to Mazzarò is a series of hairpins cut into the cliff, it is the only road, and by ten in the morning it is a slow-moving queue of hire cars looking for parking that does not exist. The cable car helps, but it has its own line, and it only goes to one place.

Further along, the coves towards Capo Sant’Andrea are where a sea taxi stops being a convenience and becomes the only sensible option. Some of these small pebble beaches are hemmed in by cliff and are genuinely easier to reach by boat than on foot. The same goes for the stretch below the Taormina cliffs where the sea caves are — you can look at them from a viewpoint above, or you can be in them.

Giardini Naxos, on the other side, has its own long shallow bay and a proper town behind it. Being able to move between Giardini and the Taormina side without the coast road is a small logistical freedom that changes what you can fit into a day.

Why locals treat the boat as public transport

There is nothing exotic about arriving somewhere by sea in a place like this. This coast has been worked from the water for as long as anyone has lived on it — Giardini Naxos was the first Greek colony in Sicily precisely because of the landing, not the view. Fishing families along the Ionian shore have always thought in terms of which bay is sheltered today rather than which road is open.

What has changed is that the roads are now full and the sea is not. On a July morning the crossing from one bay to the next takes minutes and costs you nothing in stress. You step off onto pebbles with your bag still dry, and the day starts properly instead of starting with a car park.

Practical things worth knowing

• Wind decides more than the timetable. This coast is generally sheltered, but an afternoon breeze from the north-east can make some landings less comfortable than others, and the skipper will suggest an alternative.
• Pack light and pack soft. A rucksack or a beach bag sits much better on a small boat than a wheeled suitcase.
• Bring shoes you can walk on stones in. Most of the good landings are pebble, not sand.
• Agree the pick-up before you are dropped. It is far easier to fix the return there and then than to sort it out from a beach with one bar of signal.

Is a sea taxi only for people staying on the coast?

No. Plenty of people staying up in the old town use it precisely because they are up in the old town — the descent is the difficult part. If your hotel is in the centre, walking or taking the cable car down and then transferring by sea is usually quicker than trying to drive anywhere at all.

Can you combine a transfer with a proper trip?
